What is the “Word of God” and “Word of the Lord”?
The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever (Isaiah 40:8).
Within the Bible, the phrase "Word of God" and “Word of the Lord” has multiple meanings. These phrases can refer to six different things:
(1) God’s decrees – something God proclaims, such as creation (Ps. 33:6)
(2) God’s speech to people – the actual words God speaks to personal people (Exod. 20:1–3)
(3) God's message – God reveals a divine message to a prophet for him to declare to a people (Jer 1:9).
(4) Jesus Christ - he is the eternal Word, the perfect and final revelation of God (John 1:1).
(5) The written Scriptures – God’s inspired message making up the 66 books of the O.T. and N.T. (Matt 15:5–6).
(6) The gospel message – God saves sinners through Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection and if you repent and believe in Jesus he will forgive your sins, and you will enjoy God forever (1 Pet. 1:25).
The phrases “Word of God” and “Word of the Lord” are God’s communication to humanity in all its forms, whether in the words of Scripture, the prophet’s declaration, or Jesus Christ himself.
