What does it Mean to Meditate Upon God’s Word?
My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night.
Psalm 63:5–6
God calls his people to meditate upon his Word, but what does meditation mean for a Christian? Meditation is focused reflection upon scripture and the things of God. When we meditate, we deliberately contemplate the character of God, his actions, and his promises. It is dwelling upon the truths of Scripture with the aim of impacting our hearts and lives.
Christian meditation isn’t emptying but filling ourselves with God’s truth so it takes root within our hearts. Meditating – or thinking over God’s truth – is how truth moves from our head to our hearts and overflows in spiritual vitality.
God invites his people to meditate upon himself and blesses those who do. Through meditation, we press God’s Word deep into our whole being so that we come away more like Jesus Christ.
