A Truth to Believe

What Does it Mean to Meditate on God's Word?

God calls his people to meditate upon his Word, but what does meditation mean for a Christian? Meditation is focused reflection upon scripture and the things of God. When we meditate, we deliberately contemplate the character of God, his actions, and his promises. It is dwelling upon the truths of Scripture with the aim of impacting our hearts and lives.

Christian meditation isn’t emptying but filling ourselves with God’s truth so it takes root within our hearts. Meditating – or thinking over God’s truth – is how truth moves from our head to our hearts and overflows in spiritual vitality.

God invites his people to meditate upon himself and blesses those who do. Through meditation, we press God’s Word deep into our whole being so that we come away more like Jesus Christ.

My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night (Psalm 63:5–6).

Something about Caregiving

Last week, we wrote about never giving up being in God's Word even when caregiving needs are extremely high. Here are two more ideas for how to draw your heart closer to God when you have limited time because of caregiving needs:

(1) Memorizing Scripture: Whether it is Scripture verses on sticky notes, as the background to your phone, or in art around your home, find a way to place Scripture before your eyes and then memorize it. It will be an anchor and a ballast to your soul as you go about the duties of caregiving.

(2) Listening to Music: One of the greatest ways God has encouraged our hearts – especially in extremely intense seasons – is through biblically robust music. Music is a way to hear truth while not neglecting the needs of another. As you listen lyrics - which are often Scripture - will embed itself in your mind and heart.

A Quote

If you want to grow as a Christian, you must set the attention and affection of your heart upon Jesus Christ.

Thomas Charles Encourages, "Christ in his person and office is the glass which represents (a.k.a. demonstrates) with such transforming efficacy the glory of God to us; and when we see his glory in this glass, we are transformed into the same image. In this glass the scattered rays of divine goodness and love are, as it were, brought into a focus; they shine, they burn, and inflame the heart held before it. Conviction overpowers unbelief, goodness overcomes unworthiness, and love subdues enmity."

More of Christ means being more like Christ.
