What is God’s wrath?

God's wrath is his righteous indignation and just punishment for sin. God hates all sin because it is contrary to his nature. As a holy and righteous God, he must punish sin, which is why he says, "vengeance is mine" (Deut. 32:35).

Humans provoke God's wrath by sinning against him (Deut. 9:7-8) and “storing up wrath” for themselves on the day of judgment (Rom. 2:5). But God's wrath is not only reserved for the future. Even now, “the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of men” (Rom. 1:18). 

God's wrath is never hasty rage or unrestrained fury but his stern, calculated vengeance against evil and sin (Exod. 34:7–7; Num. 14:18). Yet God is also patient, slow to anger (Ps. 103:8), and his kindness is meant to lead his people to repentance (Rom 2:4).

Believers in Christ have no reason to fear God's wrath, even though we were all "children of wrath" (Eph. 2:3). God poured out his wrath on his Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross for the sins of his people. Jesus "delivers us from the wrath to come" (1 Thess. 1:10).

All who do not repent of their sins and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ will experience God's eternal wrath for their sins (John 3:36). One day, Jesus will return to deliver God's wrath upon sinful humanity, and God's enemies who spurn his glory will experience the "wrath of the Lamb" (Rev. 6:16; 14:10).

The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and wrathful; the LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet (Nahum 1:2–3).
