What does it mean that God is Good?

Scripture testifies that "No one is good but God alone" (Luke 18:19). Indeed, God is good, and he does good (Ps. 119:68). The goodness of God encompasses several things.

God is the standard and definition of all that is good. Jesus declared that only God is good (Mark 10:18); thus, all that is good must align with his character (Ps. 106:1) and actions (Gen. 1:31). Furthermore, God isn't merely a good God; he is also the source of every good thing in the universe (Jas. 1:17), the greatest of which is himself.

God is perfectly good in his essence and character. God alone is holy and righteous. To say that God is good means that he never has evil intentions, unholy motives, or unjust ways. He is completely free from sin and incapable of error or evil (1 John 3:5). There is no darkness in God, and evil cannot dwell with him (Ps. 5:4). Therefore, God is never morally responsible for evil but is always and only good. God's intentions are always righteous; he does what is good and always produces ultimate good for his glory and the good of his people.

God is perfectly good in all his actions and ways. Since God defines goodness and is good, everything he does is good. He works all things together for the good of those who love him (Rom. 8:28). He withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly (Ps. 84:11). His goodness is displayed throughout his works—in creation, providence, provision, mercy, grace, and especially in the salvation he provides through Jesus Christ. 

God's goodness is not merely something we can know about; it is something we can experience. “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!” (Ps. 34:8). God’s goodness should continually move his people to trust him, delight in him, and give him thanks: “Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good” (Ps. 107:1).

For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations (Psalm 100:5)
