A Truth to Believe

What does it mean that God is Son?

Jesus Christ, God the Son, is the second person of the Trinity. He is the only begotten Son of God, not made, of one essence with the Father and Holy Spirit, coequal and coeternal. Through Jesus all things were made, and by the Holy Spirit he came down from heaven and was incarnate as fully man while also remaining fully God. Although he submits to the Father, he is not inferior within the Godhead. While on earth Jesus lived without sin, was crucified, died, buried, and rose again after three days. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of his Father, but he will come again to finally conquer evil and sin and restore all things.

Who is this second person of the Trinity? Jesus Christ is the LORD of glory, the Son of David, the Anointed one, the first born over all creation, the Creator of all things in heaven and earth, and the heir of all things. He is the radiance of the glory of God, the exact imprint of God’s nature, the sinless Lamb of God who takes away the sin of world, the Lion of Judah, the last Adam, the seed of Abraham, the fulfillment of the law, the Prophet like Moses, the great and sympathetic High Priest. He is the Messiah, God’s promised serpent crusher, the suffering Servant, the Shepherd Prince, the new David, the Sun of Righteous.

He is eternal life, the wisdom of God, and the light of the world. He is our Redeemer, Great Shepherd, Savior, righteousness, peace, sustainer, and our King who lives to make intercession for his people. He is the way, the truth, and the life, living water, the bread of life, the resurrection and the life, and none can come to the Father but through Him. He is the first and the last, the firstborn from the dead, the head of the church, the upholder of the universe, and he holds the keys of death and Hades. He alone is faithful and true, the Word of God, the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. … And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1, 14)

Something about Living

Imagine yourself as a character in an epic story. The Author writes you walking through danger, struggling through difficulty, and enduring real pain. It is joyful but hard, harrowing but rewarding, challenging and uncertain.

But what if, as you lived through those chapters, you already knew the ending? What if you knew that every wrong would be made right, every sorrow undone, and that the final chapter would be better than you ever dared to hope?

How would that shape the way you walked through the story? How would it change your courage, your patience, your joy, your endurance?

This is the Christian life.

By God's grace, we have been caught up in a grand tale and know how the story ends—and that hope should transform every minute of how we live until right now. Christ wins and so do we.

A Quote

"As for his saints, it is their consolation that their death is entirely in his hands. In the midst of fever and pestilence, we shall never die until he wills it; in the times of the greatest healthiness, when all the air is balm, we shall not live a second longer than Jesus has purposed; the place, the circumstance, the exact second of our departure, have all been appointed by him, and settled long ago in love and wisdom. A thousand angels would not hurl us to the grave, nor could a host of cherubim confine us there one moment after Jesus said, “Arise.” This is our comfort. We are “immortal till our work is done;” mortal still, but immortal also. Let us never fear death, then, but rather rejoice at the approach of it, since it comes at our dear Bridegroom’s bidding. ... Christ hath the key of death, and therefore death to us is no longer a gate of terror."

C.H. Spurgeon
