Come to Jesus
In 1681, John Bunyan wrote a book entitled Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ. In it he mines the depths of one verse: John 6:37, “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”
In this passage the words “come to me” are the Apostle John’s way of describing the act of salvation.
Bunyan explains, “[John] means [believers] have a discovery of the glory of the grace that is in him; and the beauty and the glory of that is of such virtue, that it constraints and forces with a blessed violence, the hearts of those that are given to him. … They see glory in his person, glory in his undertakings, glory in the merit of his blood, and glory in the perfection of his righteousness; yeah, heart-affecting, heart-sweetening, and heart-changing glory!”
Coming to Jesus does not simply mean recognizing him as one who died on a cross for humanity. Coming to Jesus means experiencing “heart-affecting, heart-sweetening, and heart-changing glory.” Glory that irresistibly compels our hearts to believe in Christ as Lord and Savior, portion and treasure, and repent of our God-belittling sin.
God saves his people through revealing the glory of Christ to the eyes of our heart.
This is why the primary weapon of Satan is to keep the human heart blind to the glory of Christ. We read, “In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). The fight for salvation is a fight to see glory.
The God-wrought ability to overcome spiritual blindness and see the glory of God brilliantly shining in the face of Jesus Christ, this is God’s work and our joy.
Paul tells us that for all who believe in Christ, we do so “for God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6).
Coming to Jesus is behold and loving his glory. There is no other path to salvation.
